Shirley Weatherly Salyer

Shirley Weatherly Salyer, 90, passed away March 19, 2026, after a recent fall and an extended period of declining health. She was born in Hiltons, VA to the late Florence Curtis and DeWitt Weatherly.

Shirley graduated from Hilton High School and was an X-Ray Technician for over 39 years at Holston Valley Community Hospital. She was especially proud of her support after the Eastman Chemical Company explosion in 1960, when she learned of the crisis while off-duty and immediately returned to assist with emergency care.

She spent nearly her entire life living amongst the beautiful mountains in the Hiltons and Kingsport area, with the exception of when she married her childhood friend-turned-sweetheart, Charles. Charles was a widower with children and grandchildren, and Shirley enjoyed becoming an instant step-mother and step-grandmother while living a few years with Charles in Bellbrook, OH. They eventually returned to the area of their roots and settled in Church Hill, TN.

Shirley enjoyed collecting dishes from estate sales, baking, and was an excellent photographer, leaving countless images of treasured memories.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, step-son, Anthony Salyer (Patricia) and siblings, Evelyn Bralley, Virginia Rose, Gerry Weatherly and Joe and Jack Weatherly.

Left to cherish her memory are her step-daughter, Patricia Shroff (Stephen), step-son, James Salyer (Nina), step-grandsons, Anthony Salyer (Amy), Justin Salyer (Kaitlyn), Jason Salyer (Megan), Alex Davis (Abbie), Michael Salyer (Chelsea), Jesse Davis (Shelby), step-grandaughter, Katherine Salyer, 12 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley will be remembered by her family for her enthusiastic greeting of "do we have company?" when visitors arrived and the many made-to-order pancake breakfasts she and Charles lovingly prepared.

The family will plan a graveside service to be held at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA, this summer.
