Sara Dawn Calhoun, 43, of the Yuma Community in Gate City, VA, a radiant soul whose smile could light up any room, passed away on April 3, 2026, at Holston Valley Medical Center. Born on August 8, 1982, in Kingsport, TN, Sara’s life was a beautiful journey marked by boundless joy, a loving heart, and a dedication to those she cherished.
A proud graduate of Gate City High School, Sara was known far and wide as a happy and outgoing person, a true people person whose presence brought warmth to all whom she encountered. She was an avid supporter of the Gate City Blue Devils and the Elizabethton Cyclones, sports teams that captured her enthusiastic spirit. Her love for community and faith shone brightly through her commitment to Big Cut Baptist Church in Gate City, where she found profound joy and fellowship.
Sara’s personality could best be described as full of life; she was always ready with a bright smile and an encouraging word. Those who knew her remember her fondly as someone who simply made people happy. Whether it was engaging in playful games with her niece and nephews, helping her sister cook with joy, or exploring new restaurants, Sara embraced life with open arms and a joyful heart. She also enjoyed fishing, finding peace and pleasure in the calm of nature.
Deeply spiritual, Sara often prayed for others, offering comfort and hope through her kindness and faith. Her proudest accomplishments were simple yet profound: making people happy, being independent, and nurturing the bonds of family and church family alike.
Sara leaves behind her beloved father, Paul E. Calhoun, Jr., who will carry her memory close in his heart. She is survived by her sister, Hope Burke, and her husband Daniel, along with her cherished niece, Kaleigh Jones, and nephews, Xander Jones and Raylan Burke. Together, they will remember Sara’s laughter, her love, and the light she brought into their lives. Sara was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Theda Faye (Marshall) Calhoun, whose spirit she surely now embraces.
