Sam J. Phillips, of Kingsport, Tennessee, was born on September 25, 1957, and passed away on March 27, 2026, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Throughout his life, Sam was known as the center of attention.
A graduate of Lynn View High School, Sam dedicated much of his life to his career as a business owner, where his determination and work ethic were steadfast. Beyond his professional pursuits, he was a faithful member of Sullivan Baptist Church.
Sam’s passion for life was evident in the myriad of memories he created with his family—whether it was family vacations, fishing trips, camping on Douglas Lake, and the simple joy of being outside on his tractor. A lifelong fan of the Tennessee Volunteers since 1969, he was never shy about cheering on the Vols with boundless enthusiasm. His love for dirt track racing fueled his sense of excitement and camaraderie.
His proudest accomplishments were deeply rooted in his family. Sam took immense pride in his children, Jessica and Jason, and especially his grandson, Colton whom he loved watching run track and play basketball. These relationships were the cornerstone of his life, a testament to the love and support he so freely gave. Alongside his wife of nearly 50 years, Delores, with whom he would have celebrated their anniversary on November 18, Sam relished the fulfillment that retirement at age 62 brought to their lives. Above all, he was proud to be a steadfast pillar for his loved ones whenever they needed him.
He is survived by the loving presence of his wife Delores; daughter Jessica Davidson and her husband Rusty; son Jason Phillips and his girlfriend Brandy Adams; grandson Colton Davidson; mother Clara (Myrl) Phillips; sisters Lisa Fincannon (David), Angie Taylor (Mike), Becky Quillen (Craig); brother Gary Phillips (Diane); and nine nieces and nephews. The family also remembers with love his father, Bill Fred Phillips, and sister Sandy Darter, who preceded him in death.
The life of Sam J. Phillips will be remembered with a visitation on Monday, March 30, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 7:00 pm with Pastor Jeff Strong officiating, both held at Sullivan Baptist Church located at 4152 Maplewood Street, Kingsport, TN. His final resting place will be honored with a graveside service at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4997 Memorial Boulevard, Kingsport, TN, on Tuesday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are welcome to gather at 10:50 am at the cemetery for the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Jason Phillips, Colton Davidson, Rusty Davidson, Mark Sant, Randy Rigg, and Thomas Graham. Sam's brother Gary will be an honorary pallbearer.
In the enduring echoes of his laughter, the vivid memories of shared moments, and the solid love he cultivated, Sam’s legacy will live on—etched forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His journey may have ended, but the story of his life continues to inspire all who follow.
