Rita Ann Howington Dingus, a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife, went to her Heavenly home on Monday, March 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her two children. Born on December 26, 1945, in Kingsport, TN, Rita lived a life marked by unwavering dedication to her family and community, leaving behind a legacy of love and warmth.
After a fulfilling career, Rita retired from the Kingsport City Police Department, where she served as a secretary in the Detectives Division. Her contributions to the department were invaluable, and her colleagues remember her for her professionalism and kindness that shone through her work.
Rita shared a beautiful life with her husband of 59 years, Phillip Henry Dingus. Together, they built a family founded on mutual respect and affection. Rita was the proud mother of Shannon Dingus and his fiancé Crystal Stapleton, and Devonne and Frank Hutchins. The love she had for her children was evident in everything she did, nurturing them with compassion and support throughout their lives.
Rita's role as a grandmother brought her immense joy. She cherished her grandchildren, Cody and Courtney Dingus, Jordan and Kathy Thacker, Courtney and Gio Watford, Destiny and Tyler Creech, and Dylan Stapleton and girlfriend Holly Wagner. Each moment spent with them was a treasure, filled with laughter and memories that they will carry in their hearts forever. Her great-grandchildren, including Paisleigh Dingus (with whom she enjoyed her special tea parties) and Paxtyn Dingus, Brady, Brennan, Atlas, and Cyrus Thacker; Griffin and Genson Watford; Laynee and Bentley Creech, brought her endless happiness, and she embraced each new addition to the family with open arms and a delighted spirit.
Rita was not just a mother and grandmother; she was a beloved sister to Alan (Phyllis) Howington, Larry (Cindy) Howington, Eddie Howington, and Denise (Buford) Reed. She also shared a special bond with her brother-in-law, Delmar Qualls. Rita's siblings and their families were integral to her life, providing a strong foundation of support and companionship.
Though Rita's parents, Robert Clinton Howington and Edna Mae Lark Howington, along with her brothers Gerald, Gary, Ronnie, Neil, and Michael Howington preceded her in death, their love continued to guide her through her life. Rita often shared cherished stories of her family, weaving a rich tapestry of memories that inspired those around her.
As we celebrate Rita's life, we invite family and friends to join together at Gateway Baptist Church in Weber City, Virginia on March 12, 2026. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 6:00 PM with Pastor Samuel Newland and Pastor Kevin Sanders officiating. Music will be provided by Wendy Acker and Jeff Watson. Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, March 13, 2026 at Holston View Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to gather at 11:50 am at the cemetery for the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Frank Hutchins, Gary Hutchins, Alan Howington, Larry Howington, Cody Dingus, and Nathan Howington.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rita's caregiver Sue Pendleton, Dr. Emily Price at HMG, Mom's sweet dog "Puppy" and to the wonderful staff of Caris Hospice.
Rita Ann Howington Dingus will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit of love and kindness will eternally resonate within the hearts of her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to thrive through the lives she touched, reminding us all of the importance of family, love, and compassion.
