Gate City, VA

Janice May Chapman, a loving mother, cherished nana, and devoted friend, passed away peacefully in her residence in Gate City, Virginia, on January 24, 2026. Born on July 21, 1935, in Bridgewater, Virginia, Janice touched the lives of many throughout her 90 years with her warmth, kindness, and undeniable passion for life.

Known for her vibrant spirit, Janice found joy in her career as a beautician, where she not only shared her talents but also created lasting connections with her clients. Her keen desire to uplift others was further reflected in her role as a substitute teacher within the Scott County School System, where she found immense happiness being around students. Her love for educating and nurturing young minds was a testament to her generous heart and her belief in the power of community.

Janice was a proud member of Gateway Baptist Church, a place that brought her peace and fellowship. She found solace in her faith, and through her involvement, she fostered relationships that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.

Janice had a love for the beauty of nature and simple pleasures. She would often spend her time watching the snow fall, finding joy in the serene moments it brought. The tranquility of being outside in the snow mirrored the calm and comforting presence she offered to her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Jamie Chapman; her beloved granddaughter, Charlina Chapman; her caring brother, Maynard Southard; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pam and Danny Carder. Janice also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Hubert McClellan; sister-in-law, Lela Southard; several nieces and nephews; and her precious dogs, Bear and Browny, who were by her side through thick and thin.

Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Chapman; her son, Anthony "Tony" Chapman; and her daughter, Rebecca Chapman. She was also welcomed into Heaven by her father, CV Southard; her mother, Willie (Glover) Southard; her sister, Phyllis Tutwiler; and her brothers, Charles "Charlie" Vinton Southard Jr. and Oliver Southard. Their memories will forever live on in the hearts of Janice's family, as they cherish the love and laughter shared over the years.

In this time of remembrance, family and friends are invited to honor Janice’s life with a visitation at Gateway Baptist Church in Weber City, Virginia, on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM with Dr. Lester Morelock officiating. Music will be congregational hymns being led by Brenda Bentley. The celebration of her life will continue with a graveside service on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Holston View Cemetery, beginning at 11:00 AM.  Family and friends are welcome to gather at 10:50 am at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Janice May Chapman leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love, dedication, and joy. Her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those fortunate enough to have known her. She will be dearly missed but lovingly remembered.
