Herman Kelly Spivey, Sr., 83, a cherished member of the Gate City community, passed away on February 28, 2026, in Kingsport, TN. Born on December 16, 1942, in the Manville Community of Gate City, VA, Herman exemplified a life filled with love, dedication, and a commitment to his family and faith.
From an early age, Herman's deep-rooted connection to his church flourished when he became an ordained Elder at the tender age of 16 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gate City. This milestone marked the beginning of his lifelong devotion to service, spirit, and community involvement.
Herman was a skilled brick mason, proudly self-employed, and his craftsmanship was reflected in the projects he completed, each brick laid with precision and care, just as he approached life. He embodied the qualities of hard work, integrity, and generosity, attributes that have left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege to know him.
Married for 61 wonderful years, Herman was the loving husband of Mavis Spivey. Together they raised a family steeped in love and values, nurturing a close-knit household that will forever cherish his legacy. Herman is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Evan Mustard, Gina and Craig Hite; and his son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Delonda Spivey. His devotion further extended into the next generations, leaving behind grandchildren Amber Bowen, Bradlee Mustard, Brittnay and Brooke, Jordan Mustard, Ashlee Wyatt and husband Blake, Kerri Overbey and husband Marshall, Hannah Herron and husband Caleb, Hope Spivey, Ashley Hite, Derek Hite and wife Carma, and great-grandchildren Cooper Herron, Sadie Wyatt, Jackson Overbey, Elsie Wyatt, Harley Herron, Kaedryn Jenkins, Kash Beck, Ava Hite, and Nolan Wyatt. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit and love in their hearts.
A strong familial bond was also evident in Herman's relationships with his siblings, who will remember him fondly: Dianne and Steve Akers, Cindy and Eddie Carter, and Brenda and Larry Fields, and sister-in-law, Debra Spivey, along with several nieces and nephews as well as his special friends, Darrell and Jan Livesay who were touched by his kindness and presence.
Herman is preceded in death by his father, Claude Sylvester Spivey, his mother, Dorothy Marie (Christian) Spivey, his sister, Linda Lawson, and his brother, Allen Spivey. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
A visitation will be held on March 4, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 6:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church located at 274 Jones St., Gate City, VA with Rev. Lacy Andrews officiating. As friends and family come together to remember Herman, they will undoubtedly reflect on the profound impact he made in their lives and the love he generously shared.
Herman Kelly Spivey, Sr. leaves behind a legacy built on love, faith, and family that will continue to inspire and guide those who knew him. His life was a testament to the strength of character and the importance of family values, and he will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have him in their lives.
