Geneva Wade Barnette

June 5, 1940 — February 1, 2026

Berrytown Community of Duffield, VA

Geneva "Nevie" Wade Barnette, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Scott County, Virginia, on June 5, 1940, Nevie was a vibrant force in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As a devoted stay-at-home mom and homemaker, Nevie dedicated her life to her family. She was a master in her kitchen, preparing delicious meals for her beloved husband, Douglas Ray Barnette, who predeceased her. Her biscuits were legendary, and her canned goods were a testament to her hard work and creativity. No one ever left her home hungry or empty-handed, as she took great pride in sharing the bounties of her garden with loved ones.

Nevie was known for her fiery spirit; she was a true spitfire. She brought joy and warmth into every gathering, making each moment spent with her a cherished memory. Whether it was playing Tic-Tac-Toe with her granddaughter Kylie, feeding her great-grandson Daxtyn snacks while watching "Wheel of Fortune," or spending time with her great-grandson Jacoby, she poured her love into every interaction. Her proudest accomplishments were her great-grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure and played an essential role in raising.

Her hobbies were many, but her heart was always in her cooking and gardening. Nevie possessed a unique ability to make every meal an occasion worth celebrating, and her perfectly manicured nails and well-styled hair told the story of her care for herself and those around her. She was truly a nurturing soul who valued family above all else.

Nevie leaves behind her cherished daughter Connie Barnette, along with her granddaughter Haley Starnes and husband Riley. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Jacoby Burke, Kylie Stuart, and Daxtyn Starnes. Her family continues with her brother-in-law Dallas Barnette, as well as her nephews Tim (Sherry) Wade, TJ Wade, and her nieces Donna Geyer, Denise Brewer, Danette Street, Danielle Richardson, Carol Brown, Norma Tremblay and  Andrea Henderson.

She is reunited in eternal peace with her loving husband Douglas, her parents Efford Mack Wade and Genie Dolay (Hood) Wade, and her brothers Ed Wade and Ted Wade, as well as her brother-in-law Donald Barnette, nephew Troy Barnette, and niece Tracy Barnette.

Nevie's impact will be felt in the lives she touched, the meals she shared, and the memories created together. A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5 PM to 7 PM, followed by a funeral service at 7 PM, at The Lord's House on Red Hill, 4330 Purchase Ridge Rd, Duffield, Virginia with Evangelist Garry Hood officiating. Music will be provided by the Hood Family. Burial for Nevie at Barnette Cemetery will be announced at a later date. She will be remembered not only for her remarkable culinary skills but also for her generous heart and indomitable spirit. Through her legacy of love, Nevie will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Riley Starnes, Jacoby Burke, Caleb Starnes, Kenny Bledsoe, Nathan Hood and Johnny Berry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Lord's House on Red Hill, 1200 Powell Mountain Rd, Duffield, VA 24244.
