Ft. Blackmore, VA

Gail Leon McConnell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and respected educator, went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2025 after a short battle with cancer.  Born on October 18, 1945, in Ft. Blackmore, Virginia, Gail lived a life full of service, dedication, and love.

Gail's career spanned an impressive 39 years as a teacher and coach within the Scott County Schools. His commitment to education was further exemplified during his 11 years of service on the School Board, where he worked tirelessly to advocate for the students and community he held dear. His legacy in education established him as a pillar of strength and inspiration for so many.

A proud graduate of Dungannon High School and East Tennessee State University, Gail carried with him the values of hard work and perseverance that he instilled in his students. His dedication to nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom, as he was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren. His greatest passions included farming and hunting, pursuits that brought him much joy and connection with nature.

Gail is lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Kathy McConnell, and their two sons, Jonathan (Kristy) McConnell and David (Autumn) McConnell. He was the proud grandfather of Ethan, Eli, Ean, Meadow, Landree, and Brogan, who will forever cherish the memories created with their beloved grandfather. His brothers, Mike (Debra) McConnell and Chuck (Margaret) McConnell, along with his sister, Helen (Ernie) Addington, continue to honor his spirit, sharing stories of family and togetherness.

Though he is preceded in death by his parents, Oliaf and Leslie McConnell, and his sister, Carol McConnell, Gail's impact on the lives of those who knew and loved him will endure forever.

In celebration of his life, the family will hold visitation at the First Baptist Church in Dungannon, Virginia, on January 3, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The family will also receive friends at the home of Jonathan and Kristy McConnell. A funeral service will follow, commencing at 2:00 PM with Pastor Larry Beavers officiating.
