Edward Kermit Rhoton died peacefully at his home, after a brief illness, on May 29, 2026 at the age of 92. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County. Born on November 25, 1933 he lived a full and generous life by the people and places he loved most.
Kermit married the love of his life, Roma, and the two shared over 66 wonderful years together before her passing.
Kermit worked several jobs during his lifetime. As a young boy, Kermit delivered newspapers on his bicycle, he served in the 1030th Transportation Battalion of the Virginia Army National Guard in Gate City, VA, worked at Kingsport Press, WB Greens as the service manager. Kermit retired from Scott County as the Building Inspector. He was President of the Optimist Club for many years. Many of you may remember him selling Christmas trees for the club in Weber City. He donated as many as he sold, to schools and churches. Through the club he also coached his children in Little League baseball and softball. Kermit was a Scoutmaster to his son, Michael, who later became an Eagle Scout. He always dreamed of having his own country music dancehall so he built one in the middle of his tobacco field and called it Kermit's Place. Kermit made everlasting friendships there. His children called it his field of dreams.
Kermit also enjoyed playing golf. He played into his 90's. Kermit also enjoyed watching the PGA, LPGA, Virginia Tech football, NASCAR, and the Duke basketball team. He loved hearing the words "Everybody up, it's football time" underneath the Friday night lights at Legion Field to watch the Gate City Blue Devils play football. When the weather was good Kermit loved to have cookouts at his cabin with his family. He was always up for a good game of cornhole.
His best friend is Nathan Catron, or as he referred to him as "Cat". He loved to play a round of golf with Nathan then eat Chinese food afterwards. Thank you for always being there for him.
Kermit is survived by his son, Lynn Rhoton, and daughters, Tammy Presley (Chris), Valerie Babb (Tim); three grandchildren, Christopher Presley II (Kameisha), Veronica Presley Kopychenko (Oleg), Brett Lee Rhoton; and three great grandchildren, Ahmiri Presley, Christopher Presley III, and Leonardo Kopychenko. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Gertrude Rhoton; brother, James Rhoton; son, Michael Lee Rhoton; and grandson, Dru Aleczander Presley.
A special thank you to Mary Beth Rhoton for all your help and always being there.
Kermit lived a full and meaningful life, and his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace in the Lord's care, reunited with those who went before him.
