In Loving Memory of David “Rick” Sumner
“Well done, good and faithful servant…” – Matthew 25:23
David “Rick” Sumner, age 75, of Hiltons, Virginia, passed peacefully from this life into the arms of his Savior on June 12, 2026. Born on August 12, 1950, Rick was a good and faithful man whose life was grounded in the things that mattered most—his faith, his family, hard work, and love for his fellow man. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, dear brother, and treasured friend, and his steady presence and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rick was a faithful member of Hiltons United Methodist Church, where he found great comfort and joy in worship, fellowship, and serving others. He was known for his warm smile, his generous spirit, and the way his presence filled a room. When Rick stepped in, you knew things were about to liven up—he was always ready to strike up a conversation, share a laugh, and visit awhile with anybody lucky enough to be nearby. Rick had a way of making folks feel right at home, and he never met a stranger. He loved his family dearly, enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation, and found special happiness in the simple pleasures of life—especially time spent outdoors and riding his horses.
Rick retired from AGC Industries after 39 years of faithful and dedicated service. Over those many years, he gave freely of his time and energy, serving as Union president, chairing the Recreation Committee, coaching the softball team, and helping organize fundraisers for children. In every responsibility he took on, Rick led with humility, compassion, and a servant’s heart. He believed in lending a hand where it was needed and in taking care of the people around him, and that spirit left a lasting impression on his workplace and community alike.
Rick also served as a Boy Scout leader for many boys in the Hiltons community, and he took that calling to heart. He believed in leading by example and teaching others the value of faith, honesty, humility, and loving your neighbor. The wisdom he shared, the encouragement he gave, and the example he set will live on in the lives of those he helped guide along the way.
Rick leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and will forever hold his memory close: the love of his life, Diana Sumner; his beloved daughter, Tina Lane and husband Craig; his granddaughter, Madeline Lane Reed and husband Kyle; his sister, Leta Deyerle and husband Robert; his brother, Sherwin Sumner and wife Judy; nieces Mary Jo Sumner and husband Jamie Jones, Misty Hartsock and husband Scotty, Erin Fisher and husband James, and Lauren Parrilla and husband Orlando; nephew Justin Sumner and wife Kendra; along with many much-loved great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Though his place here will be deeply missed, his family finds peace in knowing he has been joyfully reunited in Heaven with his mother, Janelle Hensley Speers; stepfather, Walter Speers; aunt Yvonne Kern; uncle Auburn Kern; and grandparents, Grace and Mel Hensley.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at Hiltons United Methodist Church on Saturday June 20th, with Pastors Corey Miller and Randy Mutter officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and thanksgiving for a life well-lived in Christ. Visitation will begin at 12pm, funeral at 2pm, with a graveside service proceeding.
Donations can be made to Hiltons United Methodist Church, PO Box 10, Hiltons, VA 24258 in Rick’s honor.
