Billie Joe Sturgill

Billie Joe Sturgill, a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026 with his loving wife and Jesus holding his hand, at the age of 85. Born on September 23, 1940, in Clinchport, VA, Billie Joe lived a life marked by hard work and devotion to his family and community.

Throughout his career as a mechanic at Joy Manufacturing, Billie Joe etched his legacy in the very fabric of Scott County and Kingsport, as he poured concrete that would stand the test of time. His commitment to his craft was matched only by his unwavering love for his family. He was known for being a hard-working man, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need; "If anybody needed anything he was there," a testament to his generous nature and kindness.

Billie Joe's personality shone through in every interaction. Billie was a devout Christian and a member of Purchase Ridge Community Church, he exuded a loving and caring spirit, cherished dearly by all who knew him. His passions extended beyond work, as he found immense joy in farming, caring for his cows, and tending to a lush garden that brought him peace and satisfaction.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Benita (Dalton) Sturgill. Together, they built a beautiful family, which includes daughters Rhonda Sturgill White and her husband Hubert, and Vickie Sturgill Blair and her husband Russell, as well as their son, Billy Martin Sturgill. Billie Joe took great pride in his grandchildren: Lydia Allison Johnson, Hannah Nicole McCoy, Samantha Kay White and Ariel McKennzie Swinney, along with his seven great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Patsy Sue Rhoton, Linda Jean Hammonds, and Nellie Ann Barrett, and brothers Leonard Edward Sturgill, Robert Oneal Sturgill, Paul Wayne Sturgill, and Larry Glen Sturgill, along with several nieces and nephews.  Billie had several close friends including his special friend, Forest Powers.

Billie Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Edward Sturgill and Hazel (Berry) Sturgill, as well as his sisters Mary Lou Lane and Lena Kate Sturgill, and brothers Dewey Jackson Sturgill, Elmer Lee Sturgill, and Charles Frank Sturgill. His absence will be felt deeply by his family and friends, who will remember him as a pillar of strength and love.

A visitation will be held at the Purchase Ridge Community Church, Purchased Ridge Rd, Duffield, VA, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM with Pastor Jackie Frazier officiating. Music will be provided by Matthew and Sherry Vanzant. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, February 26, 2026 at the Sturgill Family Cemetery, Kingdon Rd, Duffield, VA with Pastor Jackie Frazier officiating and Kevin Rose singing.  Family and friends are welcome to gather at 10:50 am at the cemetery for the graveside service.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Billie Joe Sturgill leaves behind a proud legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering support for his family. He is now at peace, having been anxious to see the Lord, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
